Augustinus College was founded in 1976.

It was named after AureliWikipedia - education in Hollandus Augustinus who lived in North Africa in 354. He was an example to others and always tried to build bridges  between people of different religions. Our school is a oecumenical school and from the start we teach  our pupils to respect everyone's religious beliefs just as Augustinus once did.

Augustinus College is a VMBO school  and provides  pre-vocational education.

What is pre-vocational education?

Pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) is a type of secondary education introduced on 1 August 1999. It consists of 'learning pathways' .

Fixed subject combinations

VMBO pupils will have to choose between four sectors, each with its own fixed combination of exam subjects. This will create greater uniformity. Pupils will not have to make this choice until the end of the second year at the earliest.

Learning pathways

A learning pathway is the route between the end of the period of basic secondary education and the beginning of secondary vocational education (SBO), to which all four pathways lead.

The four learning pathways are:

  • the theoretical programme
  • the combined programme
  • the middle-management vocational programme
  • the basic vocational programme.

The theoretical programme qualifies pupils for entry to the top two levels of secondary vocational education (middle-management and professional training). The combined programme is similar in level to the theoretical programme and qualifies pupils for entry to the same two levels of secondary vocational education. By contrast, the middle-management vocational programme has a more practical slant, but it too still leads on to the same levels of further education. Finally, the basic vocational programme qualifies pupils for entry to the second level of secondary vocational education (basic vocational training) only.

Opportunities for further education

In terms of opportunities for further education, there is little difference between the first three pathways. They all prepare pupils for entry to the top two levels of secondary vocational education (middle-management and professional training).

Sectors

Within each programme there are four sectors:

  • engineering and technology
  • care and welfare
  • business
  • agriculture.

The different sectors are divided into specialist departments.

These are the sectors we offer our pupils at Augustinus College:

  • building techniques ( this is a combination of general building techniques)
  • caring occupations
  • clerical work
  • commerce and retailing
  • sports and security (start august 2011)

Together with the learning pathways within VMBO, a special needs support structure is being set up to help ensure that as many pupils as possible complete their chosen programmes and obtain VMBO qualifications. Many pupils will be able to achieve this on their own without any special support, but some will need extra help.

 Learning support

Learning support will be provided to help pupils needing temporary help to cope with their chosen programme. This will take the form of extra remedial teaching. We  have a separate learning support department, where pupils will be taught in smaller groups and can learn at their own pace. Pupils receiving remedial support of this kind will follow the same syllabus as those on the mainstream programme.
